PSV has announced that U.S. international defender Sergiño Dest will be ̃oDestinjureskneestatusindoubtforCopaAméIndexbitout for an "extended period" with what appears to be a serious knee injury.
The USMNT player suffered the injury in training on Saturday, and the early signs are clearly not good.
"Sergiño Dest suffered what appears to be a serious knee injury during Saturday's training session," a club statement said.
"How long the winger will be sidelined is still being investigated. That it will be an extended period is almost certain."
Though the length of Dest's absence is not yet known, the language in PSV's statement immediately makes him a major doubt for the Copa América.
The USMNT kicks off the tournament in just two months when it faces Bolivia on June 23. Dest was almost certain to start at right back for the USMNT at the intercontinental competition.
At the club level, Dest has excelled with PSV while on loan from Barcelona this season.
The 23-year-old has become a weekly starter for the Dutch power, making 37 appearances while scoring two goals and adding seven assists. PSV is on the brink of an Eredivisie title, holding a nine-point lead atop the table with just four games remaining.
PSV has a reported €10 million purchase option on Dest at the end of the season, and the club has indicated it is open to paying that fee to permanently acquire the defender.
Dest said last week that he is open to signing a long-term deal with PSV, but reports stated that his wage demands could make a deal challenging. It's unclear how this injury could now impact his club future.
