Check your child's make-believe kitchen. The makers of popular Miniverse Make It Mini food toys are recalling 22 million playsets because the included resins may cause a safety hazard.
MGA Entertainment, the Los Angeles-based toy maker of Bratz and other products, issued a product recall on June 25 covering more than 35 types of its Miniverse Make It Mini sets because the liquid resins used to make the sets' miniature foods can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or sensitization when inhaled, touched, or ingested by children or adults, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Once the resins cure they no longer present a hazard. The toys instruct you to let the assembled miniature food dry by curing them in the direct sunlight, for instance.
About 21 million of the toys sold in the U.S. are being recalled, plus another 1 million sold in Canada. The toys were sold from October 2022 to June 2024 online via Amazon, Target, Walmart and MGA's websites and in stores nationwide including Aldi, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Hobby Lobby, Target and Walmart.

MGA Entertainment said it has received 26 reports of incidents such as skin burns and irritation, respiratory irritation involving Miniverse food sets from children and adults. In one report, a consumer’s asthma was triggered, the CPSC said.
"We're all about safety first, so we're voluntarily recalling unused Miniverse products with resins produced before May 31, 2024," the company said on MGA's Miniverse Instagram account. "These products may cause irritation or sensitization."
Sets were sold in boxes priced at about $14 to $52, depending on the model. Sphere sets with miniature foods and appliances were sold for $7-$13.
Miniverse Make It Mini recall: Toys have unsafe amount of prohibited chemicals
Each of the collectibles come with resins in containers that may look like miniature peanut butter jars, maple syrup or milk containers and, when assembled and hardened, look like miniature food dishes.
The resins contain chemicals called acrylates – specifically hydroxyethylmethacrylate or “HEMA,” and isobornyl acrylate or “IBOA” – in amounts prohibited in children’s products by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, the agency said.
The toys are recommended for children aged 8 or older.
MGA said the fall 2024 lineup of Miniverse toys will have a new resin formula.
